Texas Department of Public Safety Releases Most Wanted Sex Offender List

In early July, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) released a "10 Most Wanted Sex Offenders" list. Within hours of being online, one of the listed offenders was in custody.

To create the list, the DPS identifies violent sex offenders who have violated the terms of their parole or have failed to meet the requirements of the sex offender registry. The DPS considers all of the offenders on the list dangerous - some of whom victimized children.

According to Tela Mange, DPS spokeswoman, sex offenders who are attempting to hide do so because "[they're] generally up to no good. If you are trying to stay straight, you are dotting every 'i' and crossing every 't.'"

The DPS attempted to institute a 10 Most Wanted Sex Offenders list in the 1990s, however, the Internet was in its infancy and the list ultimately was not successful. With the proliferation and everyday use of the Internet, the DPS feels the new list will succeed. If early results are any indication, the DPS is correct.

Along with the arrest made within hours of the list's release, 10 other leads about the location of offenders were received. In addition to the public's help, other sex offenders not on the list, called the DPS to confirm that they were in full compliance with the conditions of their parole and sex offender registration.
